When I got my iMac a few days ago it started instantly by showing the tool bar at the bottom and was ready to use. Somehow I have activated the monster known as keychain and my life has changed. How can I get this thing back into the bottle?

Keychain has always been there. There was nothing to activate. It stores all of your passwords in a secure location.
What is it doing now that it wasn't doing before?
I have the same problem. I don't want to store my passwords anywhere for security reasons. I keep them memorised. And I havebn't given permission or set anything up to do so. In fact I hit a 'no' button on some website when I was asked if i wanted to remember my password.
TheEntireSky, that is actually a different problem, specifically related to Safari.
Safari stores passwords for each site, unless you tell it not to. Some websites will place a cookie on your system that enables them to log in automatically. These are two separate functions. Each one can be removed or disabled separately.
I suggest you post a new question describing what you want to do.
Like I said, I already hit 'no' and I still have the keychain like ryywie, so sorry but I think it is actually the same problem in my opinion.

Every system has a Keychain.
If you are having problems, please post a new question. Please describe your symptoms and include your system details - the model Mac you are using and the version of OS X it is running.
I would like to get rid of keychain entirely. When I first got my iMac I didn't have it and I don't know how I activated it but it is driving me crazy.
