How can I set an alarm (using the iphone's native Clock/Alarm app) to just ring twice?
There seems to be no way to control this.

It doesn't appear that there's any option for this like there is for Alerts such as Messages
The Alarm clock is designed to be an alarm clock and ring until you wake up and turn it off. You can't change that behavior. However, there are hundreds of other clock apps available in the App Store. I'm sure you'll be able to find one that meets your needs. I like Yocto Clock.

Yocto clock will let you set an alarm to stop after a minute.
I was hoping to find something that would give me more control, letting me set it to stop after 5 seconds or so.
It seems the biggest problem is that (according to an alarm app developer):
"Like all third-party alarm clock apps, for the advanced features to function you must keep the app running in the foreground (i.e., it must be open & visible) when you go to sleep. "
Having to make sure an alarm app is running in the foreground, just to allow it to work, is not something that seems very productive.
I hope that developer is wrong.
