how to use airdrop

They put airdrop into the operating system but nowhere can I find out how to use it. Does anyone out there know how to use airdrop?

Is AirDrop automatic?

I am sitting next to my wife and her MacBook is running Mountain Lion too and we are both on the same home wifi yet our computers do not show up on either MacBook.

So simple . Open AirDrop in Finder on both Macs and there are the computers.
