Wrong URL opens when clicking Mail link

I'm running Safari 6.0.2 and Mail 6.2 under Mountain Lion.

When I click on a link contained in an email, Safari opens to its home page, not the URL of the email link. I've played around with all of the preferences in the Safari Preferences / General, but the situation never changes.

Short of switching to Firefox or another browser, is there a solution?
