What is best approach to upgrade OS X 10.5 Leopard to OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard

What is best approach to upgrade from OS X 10.5.8 Leopard to OS X 10.6.3 Snow Leopard? I have a wireless network via Time Capsule. Is it possible to backup using time machine, install Snow Leopard and use back up files to restore all user/nerwork/printer settings?

iMac, Mac OS X (10.5.8)

You certainly should back up your system before upgrading, but you can install Snow Leopard directly over your existing installation, so restoring your files and settings should be necessary only if something goes wrong. Of course, you should confirm compatibility of your applications and peripherals with Snow Leopard prior to upgrading.

Yes. That is possible.

That is only necessary if you do an Erase & Install to get to Snow Leopard.

If on the other hand you just do an upgrade from the Snow Leopard install DVD, you don't have to do anything.

The Erase & Install, some time called a 'clean' install was done away with a long time ago because of improvements in the installer.

Why do you think you need to do an Erase & Install?

Check that your software is compatible, create a bootable clone of 10.5.8, and install Mac OS X 10.6 on it; if desired, you can either install on top of the existing system, which preserves the existing files and settings, or erase the partition from the Disk Utility before installing and use the Migration Assistant to restore your data from the backup, or if you don't use Boot Camp, repartition the drive and install 10.6 onto the new partition, in which case, the 10.5.8 system is preserved without needing to clone it.
