Photo Stream and Camera Roll Question

How can I keep photos in my photo stream but still delete them from my camera roll? Currently, when I delete them from my camera roll, they also are dropped from my photo stream.

iPhone 5, iOS 6.0.2

Check again, that's not how it should work.

You are correct - I intuitively knew that was not how it should work - and suspected that I was making some mistake in my use, since I am getting that outcome. Thanks for your answer, but telling me that is "not how it should work - check again" certainly does not solve my problem - does it?
