MacBook Pro Retina Fan Issues

Peppie do you have a case number that you can share with us? As we can use that to reference when we make our phone calls.

Makes it easier for the agents if we show other cases via the case number to show that we're not the only ones

My case number is:417048903. I hope they will help you more than doing smc resets which doesn't help. And I hope they gonna help you further by saying when they are going to fix it.

I have an early 2013 rMBP 15.4 2.7Ghz with a SanDisk 512 SSD and I can replicate the fan problem if I have the ClickToFlash extension installed and enabled in Safari or Webkit and then watch a Youtube video longer that 2 minutes or so. If I disable ClickToFlash then the fans don't go mental. If you look at a graph of the fan speed in iStat 2 the slope is perfectly symmetrical with a peak at maximum fan speed (approx 6000RPM) for several seconds then is slows down again back to normal level of around 2000RPM.

Now if I play something like Borderlands 2 to test the fans they seem to act the exact opposite, and in my opinion they do not ramp up speed early enough, in fact the fans are never audible. This is my first Mac though so maybe they run hotter and quieter than I expected.

I mentioned the perfectly symmetrical slope because if the fan controller was being controlled by real temperature readings from a probe there would be no way on this earth that the sides of the slope would be that perfect in shape. So I hypothesise it must be a software bug of some kind, perhaps a failsafe/test mode of some sort that is being triggered by mistake.

And it is true your macbook is (like) getting hotter because of the aluminium body, it spreads the heat way better than plastic, so it's look like your macbook getting hot.

I found the same problem on my early 2013 rMBP 2,4Ghz 256 SSD. My previous one was replaced because of dead pixel issue. After few test I found out its flash player what cuz the problem. I removed flash and stop using chrome browser cuz it has build in flash player. Also utorrent is using it so i switched to transmission. So far no problems with fans. I hope it will fix the problem and apple will soon release SMC update.

I don't think it's got anything at all to do with Flash, not directly anyway. ClickToFlash actually forces YouTube to provide a HTML5 version of their videos when CTF is enabled, it's when it's enabled that my fans go crazy, i.e. it's not using Flash. When I switch off CTF YouTube then serve Flash versions of their videos instead and in that case my fans DO NOT SPEED UP crazily,the work as normal. The rMBP runs hotter when playing Flash because its working harder, but as I have proved with this test by cross referencing temps of the various components (as reported by iStat 2 might I add, so it could be wrong) temperatures of the components that I can see readings from are not what is causing the fans to speed up, it appears to be completely unrelated on my rMBP at least anyway. Hence my thinking that it's a bug in the OSX fan control software.

Use HWMonitor to check temp. iStat is outdated softwear. In my case is showing GPU core 2 at 129 degr.

Im thinking this is cuzing the problem but i might be wrong 😟. All i know is that after removing all flash player components my Macbook is acting normal.

And iStat isn't outdated, the hardware monitor let you see the cores, iStat the CPU itself. The cores are always hotter than the CPU itself.

And gpu is not the same as the CPU...

I have the same issue, early 2013 base 15" retina. Also have the SD256. Only happens when I write on the SSD. It goes pretty wild. Unbearable! And all this reminds me of the video, especially when Sir Ive boasts the new ASSYMMETRIAL fan system, "...QuwaiTA and less in-TU-re-SEV" http://www.apple.com/macbook-pro/ , pretty funny now after experiencing the turbluent macbook!

The users certainly don''t see it but certainly CAN experience-hear it! Lets get this fixed Apple! They have 30 days! or it will go back to the Big Blue Box with Yellow Sign.

I'm not so sure how linked this is to those various programs mentioned as all 4 of the ones that I had were tested without me installing anything but the default OSX. Pure vanilla. Needed to do that to convince the apple store that it is not something I was running.

All I would do to quickly assess if I had the problem was set up machine, then only copy and paste all my music from my network drive onto my laptop and sure enough throughout the 34GB transfer it would kick the fans into overdrive. Regardless of what temp the system was and the laptop base would even get super cold with them still running at full pelt.

That is the test I did to quickly see if it would have the issue but ontop of that if time were a luxury I could just leave the latop sitting idle the display could go into sleep and cpu usage is nothing but the fans from time to time would still go up to top speed.

The 2012 rMBP I had is another story. Had it set up with everything that I use. Even with chrome open running multiple youtube videos in multiple tabs the temp would rise but I was always impressed how the fans kept the machine at the right temp but never had to kick into overdrive. I never ever when using that machine even noticed the fans. I got concerned they didn't work at the beginning I had to put my ears to the vent.

I install HWMonitors and HWSensors, and this put my macbook in UNSTABLE state !!

Kernel Panic and many others errors, is very hard do unistall it !

I also have still the issue with fan (only when Mail launches index scan while syncing mailbox). And fyi, I also have a ssd sandisk :

What you need is only HWMonitor.app! HWSensors are for hackintosh users and the last thing you want is instaling FakeSMC.kext and other drivers!!!

I was planning to buy a new MBP Retina 15, but after viewing this forum I think I'll wait for an official Apple position on this issue.
