Q: MacBook Pro Retina Fan Issues

Hi,

I bought a macBook Pro Retina just under a month ago, and have been experiencing some issues with the fan speeds.

I can be just browsing the web or checking emails or playing music through iTunes, and the fans will spin up to full speed for a minute or so, and then return to normal.

I have reset the SMC, the PRAM and repaired the Disk and Disk Permissions, with no luck, I've also tried a full format and reinstall with no luck either.

I have seen that others have been experiencing similar issues, and wanted to get some advice on where I can go from here.

Attached below is a Screen Grab of my temps and fan speeds. The fans were at normal speed for a few minutes, then went up to a high speed, back down and then back up again, and kept repeating.

Thanks in advance,

James.

I will do today and post my results. First I wait for my Time Machine backup to complete.

I am now downloading a movie, backing up with Time Machine and have Mail, Safari (with 10 Tabs open), iCal, Aperture and Word with two documents and I hear nothing.

I am also running the latest 10.8.3 developer build.

Here is a copy from the system profiler:

Petvas needs to run the iTunes test with the OVERWERK Promo song to see if the problem effects him or not. The fan problem is completely unrelated to heat output of components, you could have 60 uneffected programs running and still not see the fan issue. This is probably why Apple is having a hard time working out what the issue is. I can play the same song in DJAY and it doesn't cause the fans to spin up to full speed. With iTunes it spins up the fans at about the 1:40 mark.

@Peppie55 I think you are wrong, I have an extremely good memory (once I read something I dont forget it) and I have not seen a single post in this thread (admittedly I have not read any other threads here on this issue) where a 13" rMBP user has reported to have this issue FIRST HAND, second hand accounts do not count. Provide me a link to a post with confirmation and I will then agree with you, but until then I will continue to be adamant that only 15" rMBP's are effected and only those with SanDisk SSD's.

Post the email then, I just do not believe that we can have 38 pages of posts about a serious widespread problem like this and not have a single post in it where people have said "yes I am effected too and I am using a 13" model", not one person has said that.

There have been over a hundred people in this thread who have confirmed the issue on 15" models and probably 6 or 7 people in here who have asked if anyone had a 13" model that was effected, because they were thinking of buying one and again there has not been a single reply saying yes, until that is you said it recently and you don't know this first hand, you are quoting an email from a support agent who was probably just trying to placate you.

My early 2013 15" retina with 256GB Sandisk 1027AP has the problem and I can replicate it every time.

All I can say for now is that I have been using my MB for the last three hours and the fan went crazy only once, but as I wrote before a lot of things are going on right now on my laptop. How often do you experience the problem?

I will try to test with the song as soon as I can restart the computer. It seems to me that I am unaffected.

Even decompressing a 15GB movie didn't cause the issue.

If you replace the drive with a Samsung or OWC, the problem persist.

The problem persist also if apple swaps your laptop with a new one.
