Q: MacBook Pro Retina Fan Issues

Hi,

I bought a macBook Pro Retina just under a month ago, and have been experiencing some issues with the fan speeds.

I can be just browsing the web or checking emails or playing music through iTunes, and the fans will spin up to full speed for a minute or so, and then return to normal.

I have reset the SMC, the PRAM and repaired the Disk and Disk Permissions, with no luck, I've also tried a full format and reinstall with no luck either.

I have seen that others have been experiencing similar issues, and wanted to get some advice on where I can go from here.

Attached below is a Screen Grab of my temps and fan speeds. The fans were at normal speed for a few minutes, then went up to a high speed, back down and then back up again, and kept repeating.

Thanks in advance,

James.

Woot!  Good thing too, I was just getting ready to return mine because the 14 day window was about to expire.

I appreciate Apple releasing this so quickly, but just to be clear: they should have at least told us that something was in the works.  Could have saved themselves a LOT of heartache, and unnecessary returns.  Especially once it was clear that it was a firmware issue and not a hardware issue.  Have to say, they could have handled it better.

My 13in is having the same fan issues as the 15in problems. No SMC/ Firmware update was released today for the 13in. I have just updated to 10.8.3 and am yet to test if the fan issue is still there.

i just picked up the top of the line i7 500 gb 13 in retina today...didnt think the 15inch issue was going to be fixed soon but i needed something a bit more tranportable than the 15 inch so i am going to stick to it,

i have not had any fan issues on this one.

    i think i have a samsung ssd.

    APPLE SSD SM512E

i am assuming the above model is samsung...can anyone confirm?

True. But I do wish apple could have handled it better. It's a waste of time and effort to go exchanging laptops and trying to do everything in your power to make it work.

However, Apple engineers did well. Everything is absolutely perfect now. I was about to return my 3rd retina today. Good timing for me.

I just downloaded and installed Macbook Pro Retina SMC Firmware Update 1.1 and OSx 10.8.3 update to see if my fan issues and poor graphics framerate issues would finally be resolved...

The result is NO CHANGE. I still have crazy fans and still have poor GPU framerates. Both get improved if I unplug the power cord but reappear as soon as I re-plug. This was also true pre-update. Apple please fix!!!

Received my new MBPr 15" 16MB 512MB SSD Fedex today.  Setup, never heard any fan.  Checked and update was in the build, which shipped Wednesday.  So, all new ones should be good to go.

It was a waste of time and effort, but TBH I'd rather go through this hassle (and end up with what is now a very quiet rMBP) than get a dell or HP or samsung or other laptop.

Wife was hitting Photoshop hard this weekend, and the fan didn't come on once.  And no, it's not running hot either.  Just correctly.
