"iTunes" EQ problems

From iTunes "Help File"

"Saving your equalizer settings

You can manually adjust the iTunes equalizer and then save your customized equalizer settings to create your own "preset."

Click the Equalizer button in the bottom-right corner of the iTunes window.
Position the sliders to the desired frequency settings.

Choose Make Preset from the pop-up menu, and name your preset.

To rename or delete a preset chose Edit List from the pop-up menu."

Yeah, um ... you know, that used to work before 6.01 and hasn't worked with any of the subsequent upgrades.

I cannot make a personal "EQ Preset" anymore to save my life. Yeah, and there are just some things about the newer versions of "iTunes" that bug, big time. For instance, that dang "Slide-out window” when I'm hovering over a playlist - how annoying is that!

Well, hey, I was wondering if anyone else is having problems with "Making personal EQ Presets." If so, let me know. And, okay ... um, if there's a fix, let me know that too! : )

Well, I tell ya ... after I upgraded, suddenly the "New Age" store is gone from the main Store list. Um ... let me see ... oh yeah, as I said, while hovering over songs in my library, this huge slide-out window pops up with iTunes 6.03 and above, so I went back to 6.01. The um, oh yeah, the slide-out window really was annoying. iTunes 6.01 was serving me just fine. Indeed, if I had my druthers, I’d go back even farther than 6.01.

Simply put, I’m … em, well … just a bit tired of installing and re-installing iTunes, you know? just to get it to work properly. Not a very efficient use of time, really. Oh and yeah, I’m weary of having to put everything back into the program - from two stacks of back-up discs - when I perform a reinstall.

Nonetheless, I have made a lot of "Playlists" that contain books, music, plays etc, in the program, and perhaps when I hover over any given song the large white slide-out window with everything in my library listed on it - pops up. I don't know.

Um ... nope, don't have any plug-in's for iTunes ... didn't know there were any to be honest. I’ve got DFX for RealPlayer, Musicmatch, Winamp, and Windows Media Player, but I don’t think they affect iTunes or Quicktime. Huuuuuuummmmmm??

However, in searching for this thread today, I did see someone else had a problem with making "Personal EQ presets.” They were experiencing the same problem as I am. I make a preset, save it, and ... um ... like, when I close the iTunes program and open it again ... well, they're gone. However, I was unable to find any real solution in the reply the other iTunes customer got. So there does appear to be a solution … I just can’t … um, figure it out.

okay, this is sometimes caused by a corrupt itunes preference file. what usually fixes it for folks is rebuilding those files.

make a note of any custom preferences in your itunes that you managed to make prior to having this happen to you. (the rebuild will set all preferences to their defaults.)

quit iTunes. delete the following two files:

C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iTunes.pref

and

C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iTunes.pref

You might have to turn on "show hidden files" to find them. (Right click "my computer", select open, select Tools menu -> Folder Options. Select View tab, "show hidden files" radio button is in the center scrolling panel.) Delete them.

This will force iTunes to run the setup assistance the next time you run it and you'll have to go back and set any preferences you've changed from the default.

can you get a Custom EQ setting to "stick" for you after doing that?

love, b

Hi b!

Someone actually answered me! Wow! : )

The problem has been going on since I got rid of a version of iTunes I upgraded to - 6.0.3. I got rid of everything, reinstalled 6.0.1, and that's when the ability to use the program properly disappeared - along with the "New Age" store. However, I didn't realize it until I had reloaded everything back into the iTunes program. A problem now, since I have over 5.000 songs, audiobooks, plays, and other material I've recorded myself. It's way too much material and work to reload after a reinstall, which really only leaves me the option of dumping iTunes all together, and just stick with the Windows compatible programs. Most conversations here are about iPod and MAC. I don’t own either. For a Windows XP user, it can get confusing in here.

However ... since you were kind enough to answer my note, I will try what you suggested and see if it corrects itself. I don't hold out too much hope for a total fix, though, but if I can get the EQ to save my personal presets, then I'll be happy for now.

As to why individual "Stores" are missing from the main store drop-down, I guess, I'll have to address that in another post.

I have let iTunes know about the missing stores, but to no avail ... my own music is listed under the "New Age" category under a pseudonym, and it's a bit bothersome that I can't just leisurely see what's happening.

Thank you once again, though b - I'll try your suggestion, and let you know if it works.

Well b!

You're instructions worked like a champ, and I'm able to make and save my own personal presets. With the option of specifying a preset under "options" permanently, it's a good preference among so many others. Thank you.

As a side-effect (if you will) I found double and some triple files that have been taking up disk space, so, I can now go through them all and get back the space I know I have.

Still missing some stores in the "choose genre” drop down panel on the main store page, but I'll save that for another day.

Once again, thank you for answering my little notes, and for your help.

Be well,
