My macbook pro 85w charger broke after 5 months. I have applecare. Can I get it replaced?

Okay so I have a Macbook pro 85w charger and the cord ripped/frayed today after only 5 months of daily use. I have applecare through my school (who provided the laptops) but they say it's not covered in the warrenty. I don't want to dish out 80$ for a new one concidering how old this one is, and I know apple's chargers are notorious for breaking as soon as you get them, so I was wondering if this IS infact covered in the warrenty, and If I can get it replaced.
