iphone 4s tv out

i am pulling my hair out, i have an iphone 4s and ipad 2 and 3 in fact in this house i think we own them all.i have bought a new belkin composite lead to plug into tv, but nothink will work, no pads, pods or phones, i have even tryed with apple leads, what am i doing wrong, i just want to get video out, very simple on any other phone.if some one can help it would save me from getting the hammer out and another trip to the phone shop to buy a non i product
