Trouble repairing disk using disk utility (Snow Leopard)?

I have the OSX disk in my Mac, and I restarted it. Starting holding down the C key (mac sound isn't playing anymore) but when I do that, it goes to the load screen, and eventually the screen turns grey with a window in the center saying "You need to restart..." something of that sort. That happens everytime and I can't access the installer. Any ideas? I also tried with the option key, and double clicked the install disc when the drive and the disc came up but the same thing happens. Can anyone help me?

No start chime? Try a pram reset then try the disc again. Make sure the disc is out. Pram reset: Power off mac, power on holding option,command,P,R(no commas) press these keys as soon as you power up, hold them till you hear the start chime 2 times then release. Reboot. Try a normal boot and see if you get the start chime. If you do, you can try the discrepair.

Hi there Sam! Thanks for helping! I tried the pram reset (unfortunately the disc was in, I thought I had it somewhere else but I didn't notice until it was too late. It booted, and then I ejected the disc and tried the pram reset again) on both tries the mac sound played, but when I booted normally I still didn't hear the sound, and still couldn't access the installer. Thanks for trying!

That's a kernel panic.

Could be many causes, but as there's no chime I'd guess hardware problems.

Boot normally, and use Disk Utility to Verify Disk (not permissions - though it wouldn't hurt).


Which OS X disk are you using?

Hi there noon! I'm using snow leopard install disc. When I verified the disc, it sad the disk needs to be repaired. The error seems to be in volume information:


Checking volume information.

Invalid volume file count

(It should be 624894 instead of 624898)

Invalid volume directory count

(It should be 150300 instead of 150296)

The volume Macintosh HD was found corrupt and needs to be repaired.

Error: This disk needs to be repaired. Start up your computer with another disk (such as your Mac OS X installation disc), and then use Disk Utility to repair this disk.


I was thinking of simply reformatting, but since I can't access the installer, I'm in a little bit of trouble here haha.

If so, what OS version did the computer ship with?

If you're not sure, post the model identifier from;

 > About this Mac > more info > hardware overview (that's the default page).

Should look something like MacBook Pro2.1 or some other number.

Given that we can find the original build.

Indeed it is the retail installer of Snow Leopard. The Mac book pro also came with Snow Leopard, I have not changed the OS.

I thought so - the 7.1 shipped with 10.6.3 at a later build no. than the retail version, so the retail can't boot.


You'll need your original grey discs to boot from. If you can't find them, call Apple Customer Services with the serial number of the Mac and ask for replacement discs. I understand they charge about $16 per disc + taxes. Not sure if that includes shipping.

Thanks yeah. I'm having a lot of trouble finding them. No idea what I did with them! I looked in the box my Macbook Pro came in, but to no avail. I'm truly bewildered. I'm not one to throw away CDs and the most logical thing for me to have done was to leave them in the box along side the instruction booklets and all! Thanks agan for all the help though, I'm going to comb my house searching for them, and if worse comes to worse... Well, I'll have to pay for a new copy!
