child forgot passcode set on ipod touch, unlock remotely?

My child set a new password and can't remember to get into our device. The device is disabled and says to go to itunes. Do I have to take it to Apple store?

If the phone had been synced with iTunes after setting the new passcode, you could back it up and restore it on the computer it was synced with to remove the passcode. If it wasn't, iTunes will require that you enter the passcode before restoring the phone. It this case all you can do is force the phone into recovery mode, restore it as a new iPhone and start over. (This is for your own protection, preventing a thief from gaining access to your data without the passcode.)

If you want to try, do the following:

  1. Connect the phone to the last computer it was synced with.
  2. Go to the View menu at the top and choose Show Sidebar (only necessary if using iTunes 11).
  3. On the left side under Devices, right-click on the name of the phone and choose Back Up.
  4. After the backup completes, go to the Summary tab to the right and click on "Restore iPhone" (or "Restore" if not using iTunes 11).
  5. Let the phone restore. It will download a copy of the iOS, then go through a number of steps to install it on the iPhone, the phone will eventually restart and reappear on the left side of iTunes. You will then be given an option to Restore from Backup or set it up as a new phone. Choose Restore from Backup.

If you encounter a prompt from iTunes telling you to enter the passcode on the phone during the initial step(s) of this process you're out of luck. You will then have to decide if you want to keep trying to remember the passcode or erase the phone and start over, unless you have an existing backup you can restore from. If you want to do this, follow this guide to force the phone into recovery mode and restore it: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1808. This will allow you to restore the phone without backing it up. At the end of restoring the phone you will go back through the setup screens and will be given the option to set it up as a new iPhone or restore it from an existing iTunes or iCloud Backup (see image below). If you have an existing backup, choose the appropriate option to restore from this backup; otherwise choose Set Up as New iPhone.
