the volume working on my macbook the mute button seems to be checked on the sound preferences but it won't let me uncheck it pls help

Yes i did that didnt work ...its not my headphone port either cause it didnt turn red...should i re install mac lion os
If you see red light in the headphone port, plug the headphone
in and out of the port 5 or 6 times to flip the microswitch inside.
Sound output may be stuck in the digital mode.
Option click the speaker icon in the menu bar and see whether the internal is selected or not.

"Resetting SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own".
