AppleCare is sending a replacement with a return mailer for the old battery. I just said the battery was bulging and looked dangerous. They knew what to do. They asked if the battery had damaged me, my Mac, or any other property. I answered not yet, not that I'm currently aware of, and not yet. They'll charge my credit card after the replacement if they don't receive my bulging battery in 10 days. Sure hope the return carton is explosion-resistant... 8^o

My 17" MBpro battery is shot as well -- back all buckled out. I noticed the cut outs on battery power about a week ago, no warning, just shut off. This morning I noticed the laptop was wobbling slightly on the desk -- flipped it over and was shocked to see the battery bulging out like it was gonna explode!

Called Apple, and they told me phone support was gone for me (laptop is 8 months old) but they made an exception cause the nearest Apple Store is an hour and a half drive away. Took my credit card number (pre-authorized for $129) to hold as hostage until the battery is returned. Like I got that in my pocket! Guess it's Mac-n'Cheese till the hold is released.

So, I'm running without the battery - taped a piece of paper over the opening to keep things clean till I can replace with a new one. This is really pitiful for a machine of this cost -- and I hope there's nothing damaged inside. My luck, it would show up the day after the warranty expires.

Oh, and I also noticed the thing runs so much cooler without the battery. Before, I could hardly type cause the thing was so hot. That's just not right...

I bought my MacBook Pro last July and my battery has blown up too. At first it was just a small bulge, and I removed it from my computer and have been running off AC, but then two days after I stopped it using it, the other side of the battery just popped open out of the blue. Just sitting on my desk doing nothing! A) is that normal; has that happened to other people and B) should I be worried? I bagged it up (like that might help) and put it in the garage. Should I be concerned at all about it like killing me or something

I called AppleCare last monday (7/9/07) and they said they would send me a new battery by the end of that week, but I haven't heard anything. Does anyone know how long it should take for them to send it?

Thanks for the help!

HELP!!!!
My MBP also started having random shutdowns and a few days ago the battery suddenly popped. This happened while i was in THailand. I brought my computer to the apple store there but they said it'll take two weeks before they can replace it. My problem is that i'm leaving for the Philippines in two days. So i went home frustrated and decided to just bring it back to the Philippines. When i finally did, THEY WOULDN'T REPLACE IT!!! They said it's not covered by the Apple Care Protection Plan!!! A new battery costs $175 here!!! What am i supposed to do? Should i just buy a new battery? Is it time to sell my MBP and go back to PC instead?

Yes! This happened to me this week, actually. ONe day my battery just stopped charging. I called Apple Support and they sent me a replacement.

While I was waiting for the replacement to ship, I noticed my laptop wasn't sitting flush against my desk and the battery had started to expand. I took it out and two days later, it expanded significantly MORE. I was worried Apple would claim that I did something to damage it and would make me pay for the replacement.

But when I called them to say what had happened, they acted as if that was normal and said not to worry. Just send it back. So then I stumbled upon this thread and saw that it wasn't just me. Gotta love spending $3000 on a laptop where the battery goes bezerk after just one year.
