Suddenly get error message to say cannot complete backup because data disk already in use

Hi. I have been usimg Time Capsule for my backups for years. Now I get the above error message referencing (I think -- I'm at work and away from my MacBook Pro) /Data/JRHome.sparsebundle. Any thoughts?

Time Capsule 802.11n (3rd Gen), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

Restart the Time Capsule.

I'm suddenly receiving the same error msg from my Time Machine:

Time Machine could not complete the backup

The backup disk image “/Volumes/Data/Macintosh.sparsebundle” is already in use

I restarted my MacBook Pro and that didn't work. I opened TM preferences and reselected the disk, confirmed password, but I'm still getting same error message. It sounds like the next step is to restart/reboot the Time Machine itself, yes? Will this jeopordize any of the saved content? How do I restart it? (btw: likely dumb question, but I'm assuming references to Time Capsule and Time Machine in these threads are referring to the same thing? also assuming that the TM functions as the wireless/airport utility in all cases as it does for me???) thx

worked like a charm. thanks.

one more question: I seem to have lost my email history. Not sure if this is related to the TM issue or not. Not long ago Apple Mail stopped working. After rebooting, etc., I needed to delete the account and re-set it up (this happens periodically). But I always move the content of my inbox, sent, etc. to folders to move back after the account is recreated. This time, I'm pretty sure everything was back in place when I finished -- with all my contents where they were originally, but then a few days ago, I noticed all my emails had disappeared except for the most recent. My laptop and iphone sync via iCloud, and everything was gone from my iphone as well. Gone for good?

I'm a it out of my depth, but part of that may be whether it's a POP or IMAP account. Doing that seems to work, usually, on an IMAP account, but not POP.

Even with IMAP, I think stuff more than a month or so old may disappear.

Have you looked in your backups, via the special handling for Mail (see the link in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #15). That may not find the older account, though -- it's only looking for backups of the recreated account, even if it has the same name.
