27" Core I7 Imac (Mountain Lion) keeps having kernel panic's, cause..Graphicscard..second display

Hello all,

I have been dealing with ever increasing Kernel Panics.

Reading the crash report seemed to indicate the problem arises from the Graphics Card.

I have a second display connected (Dell S2309W) through my mini display port using a Mini Display port to DVI adapter.

This setup was working fine for a long time, however for no apparent reason my system keeps on crashing.

I decided to simply unplug the second monitor and low and behold my system is stable again, so clearly this is the culprit.

The question I have now is whether this is likely a hardware issue, i.e. a problem with the display port itsel or something related perhaps to the graphics card, (which seems to be what the crash report indicates).

Is there a possibility to run a firmware upgrade on the graphics card on board the mac ? Could that help?

Does anyone have any experience with this and have suggestions to fix this problem.

Thanks in advance.

M

Hey there,

Below is the last KP report.

What made me think that it's related to the Graphics card are the bold strings of text.

Don't get me wrong, I am not Apple Coder, but I read the lines thinking that these would be related to graphicscard.

Tell me what you think ?

M

There you go. Most likely software culprits are these:

com.rogueamoeba.InstantOn 5.0.2

com.TrustedData.driver.VendorSpecificType00 1.5.0

com.zeobit.kext.Firewall 2.3.1

com.zeobit.kext.AVKauth 2.3.1

com.quark.driver.Tether64 1.1.0d3

com.Cycling74.driver.Soundflower 1.5.3

com.attotech.driver.ATTOiSCSI 3.4.1b1

com.AmbrosiaSW.AudioSupport 4.1.2

at.obdev.nke.LittleSnitch 3894

Boot into safe mode, restart holding down the SHIFT key. If no KPs, then it is one of those. Remove or disable and boot normally. If KP, then most likely hardware related.

OK, It's gettin late here.

Will give this a shot tomorrow and get back to you.

Of note, ZEOBIT is "Mackeeper" SW

What looks suspect to me is com.attotech.driver.ATTOiSCSI since that to me could be related to my Drobo which is connected through Firewire.

Funny thing is that since I've disconnected my second display (mini display port) i have not had any crashes.

Would any of these SW lines be related to the display drivers?

Or do you think, that this "smells" more like a HW problem.

I've been told that Imac 27" are prone to HW issues ?! Know anything about that ?

Really appreciate your help by the way !

Cheers,

M

AFAICT, MacKeeper is suspect for many reasons. I don't have any drobo thing, so can't comment on that. If removing the second display eliminates the KPs, then I suspect that's the issue, but the safe boot should not load any of those 3rd-party items, so if KPs, with the display plugged connected, should be the confirmation. I have no HW issues with mine.

27" Core I7 Imac (Mountain Lion) keeps having kernel panic's, cause..Graphicscard..second display
