When I'm using phone in LTE vs 4G I do not receive messages or phone call/voice mail. Why is this happening and why have LTE if you can't use your phone in full capacity. Do I need to switch over from one to the other and what is LTE for?

Did you purchase your iPhone from your carrier? Is your carrier an official iPhone carrier? There are several variations of the iPhone 5. For example, iPhone 5s purchased in the U.S. will not work on every LTE network in the world. Different carriers use different frequencies.
I did not get it from AT&T but that is my carrier. I think I just have iPhone 5. So should I just leave my LTE option off and just use 4G?? Thank you.
Where did you get it? If the phone is supposed to work on LTE and doesn't, you should see about getting it fixed. Make an appointment at the Genius Bar at your local Apple Store. They'll be able to tell you if it's the right phone and, if so, what to do next. Seems kind of silly to have a phone that should be working on 4G LTE and, instead of trying to get it fixed, just turining that off. However, that's just my opinion.
Your right. I just have read so many discussions that a lot of people are having trouble with the LTE on iPhone 5 and Apple is doing nothing about it.
I certainly haven't seen very many of such discussions. Most of the ones I've seen about problems with 4G LTE are related to attemping to use a phone intended for a different carrier. And those issues are hardly Apple's fault. You'll never know what Apple might or might not do unless you ask them.
