Any router should work just fine, but I'm sure Apple would appreciate you going with an AirPort Extreme or Express 😉
I have two Netgear N300's (big building)
The network is seamless in the sense it's the same SSID, but different wifi channels. iPhones, Androids, Macs, PC's of all makes and models have no problem connecting to it.
I highly recommend Netgear for networking.
I have a netgear now but its older and i have updated the firmware on it but that did not help.
Just about any router compliant with the standards will work. If you are having problems, it may not be the router. What would help is if you told us EXACTLY what problem you're having.
we recently got an iphone 4S and an iphone 5 we both can connect to wifi most anywhere work etc but at home we cannot connect to our wifi. We have tried everything that ha been suggested by apple att and net gear but when we try to connect it says unable to join network.

Sorry, but that tells me nothing - one man's "everything" is another's not quite enough. When I said "EXACTLY", I meant just that... What happens in vagueness, stays in vagueness!
Lets see what i have tried restored phones and router to factory settings reset network settings on both phones
turned on airplane mode turned on wifi rebooted and tried to connect rebooted router several times updated the firmware on the router not sure if this is "EXACTLY" what ive done but close.
I'm referring also to the router settings such as security mode (should be WPA2 personal), correct password entered, broadcasting SSID (i.e. not a hidden network), no MAC address restrictions (i.e not restricted to certain devices), set for 802.11a/n-b/g/n automatic mode, etc.
Im a novice on the router settings so ill tell you what i see when im in the settings security mode is WPA-PSK TKIP + WPA-PSK AES 802.11g and 802.11b correct password is being used
Sorry that was WPA-PSK TKIP + WPA2- PSK AES
Make sure there is not a MAC address restriction setting. Sorry, but can't tell you where this appears in the Netgear settings. Also, try setting to WPA2 only.
Router MAC Address Use Default Address this is all i see about MAC
Specifically, what model and version Netgear router do you have? There are known problems with a couple of them.
We need to know your Netgear make/model to be able to advise the next step.
To note, Apparently some people's iPhones are affected by the N300
