The drive accepts discs but they do not mount or are automatically ejected

  1. Check the disc's surface for scratches and dirt, since these things can prevent the disc from appearing on the desktop.
  2. The MacBook Air SuperDrive is designed to be used with MacBook Air and Mac mini computers that do not have a built-in optical drive. For best results, connect the MacBook Air SuperDrive directly to the computer's USB port instead a USB hub.
  3. Reset the System Management Controller (SMC).
  4. Ensure your drive can read the specific type of disc being used. The System Profiler or System Information may provide additional information regarding what media your computer supports.
    • Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard or earlier: Open Apple System Profiler by choosing "About this Mac" from the Apple () menu. Then, click More Info.
    • OS X 10.7 Lion or later: Open System Information by choosing "About this Mac" from the Apple () menu. Then, click System Report.
  5. If the disc continues to not be recognized, contact Apple, an Apple Authorized Service Provider, or make an appointment with an Apple Retail Store for additional troubleshooting, evaluation, or service.

All suggest actions described above and on referent pages have been attempted / performed on a late 2009 iMac 2.8Ghz with OS X 10.8.2 with no benefit. DVDRW (Memorex) DVDs are rejected in the same manner described above. Standard CDs are accepted and their contents or lack thereof can be viewed successfully. Please advise. Is there a fix for this? When?

Additional information: Memorex DVD+R DL mounts successfully. Empty DVD is observed using finder. Have yet to attempt burning to disk with this DVD +R DL

Present RAM is 4GB and screen size (does it matter) is 27"

I have a 2009 Mac Mini and upgraded to OS 10.8.3 and thought they came out with a patch, but no avail! The SuperDrive just spits out DVDs. DVD R DL however mounts and writes! THIS IS DEFINITELY APPLE'S FAULTY FIRMWARE ISSUE. I have tried every thing known by other discussions, including resetting SMC, CD cleaning, etc. Now, I have given up on this issue, since no one has come up with any solution to this matter. I hope someone takes notice of this beleaguring issue from Apple.

PLEASE HELP, SINCE I WANT TO USE DVD R TO ARCHIVE.

Found by taking iMAC to the Genius Bar the following:

Optical Drive would mount and play multiple CDs.

Intermittent at best mounting of DVDs of about any type into system.

Apple recommendation and action was to replace the Optical Drive.

Everything works fine now. DVD+R DL works... DVD+R RW works

The OS has not been updated from the 10.8.2. I see that the 10.8.3 is available to me for download and install. Should I dare to go forward?

It may save you a lot of grief just to make an appointment with the Genius Bar....

I have a similar problem with my 2009 vintage iMac only it accepts DVD-Rs but rejects all CD-Rs and CD-RWs. I have tried to update my firmware, but I don't know how. An article in apple support suggested that accepting all software updates would bring my firmware up to date. This was no the case. I have published a discussion asking for help in knowing if I should update my firmware and how to do it. While I wait for responses to that question I am considering other options, such as purchasing an iMac compatible external DVD writer (which will also burn CDs) for $40 (made by ASUS).
