Why do most of my fonts in Keynote track extremely tight?

I am using Keynote '09 (5.3) on a MacBookAir. Most any font I choose (other than the standard fonts loaded in the templates) seem to track so tightly, any word seems to appear like a blob. The font is recognizable but the kerning is like negative 100! I cannot control this 'tracking' either.

I found a post that offered to remove duplicates or re-install certain fonts but this should not be the issue--nearly ALL my fonts are affected this way!

Any help will be appreciated.

If you undertake a software repair it should sort this problem by clearing the font cache

  1. shut down the Mac
  2. start the Mac again and press the shift key immediatly after the start up sound, and continue to hold until the gray apple appears
  3. let the Mac run until the desktop appears, this will take longer than usual, its repairing your software
  4. from Applications folder > Utilities > Disk Utility; click on your system disc in left pane > First Aid > Repair Disc Permissions
  5. restart normally when completed

Thanks Gary!

Before trying your solution, I launched Keynote again tonight and got this error (below). After the Safe Mode/Permissions Repair, Keynote displays the fonts correctly.
