My imac 27 inch screen occasionally dims down and or goes black but does not turn off, does any one know what this could be, think I am off warranty now as well.

No that is not it, if someone was using this and had it on auto they would know that it automatically does this, I have mine set on never (auto disabled) it would be nice if it were that easy, it is definately something unusual and not normal, forget the stupid energy saver, this is beyond any simple settings, thanks
Try resetting both the SMC and PRAM

If no change I would suspect a hardware problem, like LED backlight boards, possible cable failure, etc.
I would take it in for repair, or genius bar consult and diagnostic.

Thanks for the info, I have reset the SMC yesterday reading from a different forum, and so far it seems to have worked, I did read from some other forums that yes it coiuld be the led back lighting failing and apparently apple is aware of it and has a new better replacement kit for it, all beit probably needs to be installed by a mac repairer, anyway see how it goes from here, appreciate the help.
