Dolby 5.1 not working on my av amp when using ATV.

When I watch movies which I have downloaded from iTunes (Looper HD was the last one I watched) it does not send a Dolby 5.1 signal to my Sony AV Amp. It is connected via a HDMI cable and I have tried it with an optical cable also. I have looked in setting but I can not find a reason why I can't get Dolby 5.1 from the Apply TV 3. I have restored the ATV3 but made no difference. I'm considering buying another to see if it is the actual ATV which is at fault. Any suggestions.

Apple TV, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

Have you checked that particular movie has Dolby Digital, have you checked the Apple TV Dolby Digital setting.

The film is Dolby 5.1 and is stored on my macpro. The audio setting for Dolby is set to auto and when I switch it to on, it makes no difference.

Same for me. No Dolby surround output on my ATV 3rd gen (latest firmware).

Had the 2nd gen which worked fine.

Is this a JOKE?! This company is going downhill, and not that slowly. With Jobs gone, say hello to the next Microsoft.

It is so annoying to know that nowaday all the content is digital...I am using less and less DVD, BD etc...all digital.

I just simply want to play content through ATV WITH Dolby Digital...no luck.

I have the following set up.

ATV via HDMI to my Sony Bravia (2012 model). My BOSE 321 connect to my TV via a toslink cable.

I have connected to my tv a cable setbox via HDMI, so the audio output is able to go through my TV to my BOSE. HD Channels on my cable setbox (sound through the BOSE) is on Dolby Digital 5.1. But when switching the ATV on -> Only ATV is on PCM 2.0!

WHY??? SO FRUSTRATED!

I have the same problem. I have a new Pioneer Elite receiver and an Apple TV and have only HDMI connections. Not only was I not getting 5.1 sound, I was only getting 720 video thru the ATV when my tv is 1080p. I posted this question and was told that my Internet speed was the problem. I have 8mbps and I called my ISP who said I needed 10mbps and they don't offer that in my rural area. Here is a clip you can download from Netflix on the ATV to check to see if you can get 5.1 or not. This clip will imitate loud sounds from all your speakers/subwoofer to show exactly what you get. Will also show your video resolution. Clip name: Example Short 23.976
