Hi, I have a new imac and upon starting it after setup, I am getting this: Messages Agent wants to use the "login" keychain.

I have tried the computer password(setup for login to computer upon boot), my Apple Account password, but nothings seems to work.

Please advise.

What is Messages Agent ?

What dang password does it want ?

VERY frustrating !

OS X Mtn Lion Ver 10.8.2

All is brand new.

Thanks,

Gary in Oregon

Back up all data.

Launch the Keychain Access application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Keychain Access in the icon grid.

Select the login keychain from the list on the left side of the Keychain Access window. If your default keychain has a different name, select that.

If the lock icon in the top left corner of the window shows that the keychain is locked, click to unlock it. You'll be prompted for the keychain password, which is the same as your login password, unless you've changed it.

Right-click or control-click the login entry in the list. From the menu that pops up, select Change Settings for Keychain "login". In the sheet that opens, uncheck both boxes, if not already unchecked.

From the menu bar, select

Keychain Access Preferences First Aid

If the box marked Keep login keychain unlocked is not checked, check it.

Select

Keychain Access Keychain First Aid

from the menu bar and repair the keychain. Quit Keychain Access.

Hi,

Did it say Message Agent or IMAgent ?

Once you have set up Messages app then at the computer Start up the IMAgent (Support app) starts up as well.

It provides "Listening" function to the iMessage account and to any AIM, Jabber or Yahoo Account you may have set up.

However to do so it needs to access the passwords for those accounts.

It could be you did not set up up Passwords (which will make Messages ask you each time you login) or the item in the Keychain is not allowing the IMAgent to access the password.

Go to the Applications/Utilities folder and open the KeyChain Access item.

Make sure the tip left says Login keychain, lower left is set to Password.

In the right hand pane find the Account(s) names involved in Messages.

Double click one and a separate pane will open.

IN the Access tab it will tell you if "all apps " can access it or will list a restricted list.

As Linc Davis says you may need to Repair the Keychain if things look OK on the surface.

Hi,

Thanks for the replies, both Ralph and Linc !

However, I was not able to use the info you provided as the problem appeared to be slightly misstated by

me.

The imac is brand new, so I called support this morning and solved the issue within 10 minutes which

included testing by me just to make sure while I had support on the phone line. Easier in this case to

talk with somebody directly.

I should have done this a few days ago, but I am a problem oriented guy who tries to solve everything

by himself-or at least with some pointers here. Oh well, the main thing is the imac now works as it

should and I am once again a happy camper, so to speak.

Sure, actually meant to....

We started from restarting the computer.

Startup screen had my name in the center of a violin.

I clicked on this and it asked for a password.

I entered my login password and it asked for the Message

Agent password(the apple acct pw in this case for use in imessage etc), which I entered.

Then asked for my facebook pw, and I entered the same pw as

my apple acct pw-this for the keychain I guess, not my actual

FB pw. I entered this and we were done.

Hope this helps someone, not many details.
