The latest version for the first generation is iOS 3.1.3, so you will have to find apps compatible with that version. There are less available than there are for iOS 4, but they're out there.

beat me to it 😀 i was gonna say the EXACT same thing. i wish they had a section on the app store with versions compatible with that particular ipod.
