What would happen if i unplug my iphone while icloud is backing up

my boyfriend was trien to update his iphone 3gs from 4.2.1 to 6.0.1 and it automatically started to do icloud back up, he cant do anything on his phone, it just says icloud back up with a picture of a cloud and a swirly arrow in the middle. he cant go the the home screen, recieve messages, NOTHING! how can we stop it, its been like this for about 4 hours. and if we cant stop it, what would happen if i just unplug it from itunes??? HELP PLEASE!!

I wouldn't recommend interrupting it. If this is the first time it has been backed up to iCloud this can sometimes take quite a while. If you look at the top of iTunes where the progress window is, if there is an "x" to the right you could try clicking on this to stop it.

If you absolutely must stop it, don't just pull the plug out. At least eject it first by clicking the up arrow next to the name of the phone.
