What happens if you try to restore from your iCloud to an iPhone with smaller memory?

I lost my iPhone the other day and I will be getting a new iPhone, however it will have smaller memory (from I think 16GB to 8GB). I am guessing that this will cause some problems - is there something I can do to only restore certain items of choice?

Also, I took some photos on my lost phone that would not have been backed up - is there a way for me to retrieve these photos?

Also if I restore onto my new phone, would it remove these photos, or would I still be able to view/see them if my lost iPhone is found?

iPhone 3GS, iOS 5.0.1

But take into account that the OS will keep a good part of the 8 GB, in % more thasn in the old one.

Thanks, that's helpful - though it seems to be talking about restoring from iTunes. What if I was wanting to restore from iCloud?

Sorry. I was not exact. I thought you could anyway go throgh iTunes.

Not sure if direct from iCloud you will have the same chances.

Could you use a Mac with iTunes to get all down and later connect the new iPhone to iTunes ?

It will be necessary to setup a new user account to not interphere with the existing account.
