When I connect devices to the USB port (any of 4) on my 27" iMac, the device(s) are not recognized. I have to restart the computer before they are recognized. Why is this occurring and what can i do so that devices are instantly recognized?

USB devices do not seem to be 'hot swappable' on my 27" iMac. When I plug a device into one of the 4 USB ports, it is not instantly recognized. I have to restart the computer before it is recognized. I've done a system check, and there doesn't seem to be a problem wth the hardware based on this simple test. Why is this occurring and what can I do so that devices plugged into the USB ports are recognized?

iMac (27-inch Mid 2011), OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)
