My imac dies when I open IPHOTO - this has been since I added a 1tb seagate portable hard drive to store the photos on. Any help please

When you say dies, do you mean the screen just goes blank and you can't get it to move until it reboots?
No a black curtain falls and tells me to reboot computer. However I have just copied one folder off of Seagate back into Iphoto and it has not collapsed!! Also in events the pictures have come back on - before it was black square with the same title underneath but no front covers. All very odd but maybe I have redirected the photos back into iphoto - don't know what i've done really!
