my ipod ios 4.2 updating problem

With iOS 4, you need to plug it into the computer and hit Check For Update, it should update to iOS 6 where you can to wireless updates under Settings > General > Software Update
I suspect you have a 2G iPod. Those can only go to iOS 4.2.1.
