Corrupted MacBook Hard Drive

The hard drive on my MacBook is corrupted. Disc Utility is asking for the OS disc. About six months ago I updated to Snow Leopard from Leopard. I have beither disc with me. My files are backed up on an external hard drive. Is there anything I can do/anwhere to go (like Staples) where they can fix it without the disc?

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

Try restarting it with the Shift key held down; this quietly runs a repair utility.
