Everything... just gone... its all gone

I suppose this is just as easily an iTunes question but here it goes.

When I tried syncing my ipod touch with my laptop this morning over wifi everything disappeared. All music and podcasts are completely gone from the ipod music player (the apps are still place). My 32 BG ipod is reading as 27.39 GB free (prior to the sync it was reading something like 3 GB free). iTunes on my laptop still has all my music and podcasts (many still marked as unplayed) but the music player on the ipod has nothing at all.

I thought this would be an inconvenience but still manageable. I got the data cable with the intention re-syncing everything out of iTunes. It would take a while but I could get back up an running shortly. However, this doesn't seem to make any difference. It syncs and then copies over nothing at all.

Thoughts?

Try:

- Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost

Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at

least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.

- Unsync all music and resync

- Reset all settings

Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.

All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.

- Restore from backup. See:

iOS: How to back up

- Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.

If I go to the ipod within iTunes on my desktop (confusing right?) there are several tabs like Music and Podcasts. The sync music, etc boxes were all unchecked. Very strange. I didn't change any settings and it wasn't causing any problems before, whatever the setting may have been. If they were unchecked, how was it working before? If they were checked, how did they become unchecked? Total mystery. Anyways, checking these boxes fixed the problem.
