What are the downsides to using MacKeeper?

Are any external security programs needed for iMac? I thought Apple engineered security into their programs at their inception.

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7.2)

You really have no need for MacKeeper. It can slow down your computer as well as give a false sense of security. OS X has built-in anti-malware software if you install current updates (such as updating yours to 10.7.5.)

For general anti-virus protection I recommend using ClamXav.
