More "Software Instruments" choices

Hello. I was wondering if I could enrich the number of Software Instruments (green ones) in GarageBand. In general terms GB is pretty rich synth-wise but I was very disappointed in the Bass and Drum Kit sections. I really want to produce music using more musical instruments, not just the ones that GB has on default. Can I download (for free or purchase them) more instruments or should I move to another software?

Please don't get it confused with Loops. I am not interested in Loops. I'm talking about the instruments through which you produce your own music. I'm on GB '09 part of iLife '09. Thank you.

you can buy Mainstage 2 from the Mac App store, it includes all the Jam Packs as digital downloads which used to be sold for GB (1,700 instruments and 15,000 loops), it's about $30 (iirc each one used to sell for $99)

there are also thousands of SoundFonts online you can D/L for free; links to 5,000ish:

how to install them (short story):
