Grey screen...with an Install disk, disk verify incomplete and disk repair failed.
Is there anything to try before erase and reinstall system?
(Documents are backed up ok...don't know what else I might be losing--my added applications, I guess...)

You will lose everything you haven't backed up. Also, maybe your hard drive is damaged, but first, erase the disk with Disk Utility and reinstall OS X. If this works, there's nothing to worry about the hard drive
