I have an early 2011 Macbook Pro. Since I've installed Mountain Lion, the following has happened twice. I shut off the computer, sometime later turned it on and during startup (right after desktop appeared) it shut off. No reboot loop, nothing like that, it simply shut off. Both times I entered into safe mode by holding Shift key. In safe mode I basically did nothing, just rebooted the computer, and voile, it is working like charm now.

What do you think this is? In disk utility I checked all my partitions - no error was found on any.... What my concern is if it happened twice, it'll happen more (since I don't know what the cause was, nor what fixed it). Any ideas?

    Couple things you could try

    Reset the SMC and PRAM

Have you run a Apple Hadware Test?

  • sanjampet Level 5 Level 5 (7,710 points)

If it runs fine in safe mode, it is a 3rd party application causing it. You don't have MacKeeper do you?

  • leroydouglas Level 6 Level 6 (14,775 points)

Very good point,  overlooked that !

  • gyongyosim Level 1 Level 1 (0 points)

Yes, it is running superfine in safe mode. And no, I don't have mackeeper. But during my browsing the internet sometimes it does open a "popunder" browser window advertising MacKeeper but never downloaded that.

  • sanjampet Level 5 Level 5 (7,710 points)

spotlight search your MBP for anything MacKeeper, or Zeobot, it sure seems as though it got there somehow? (It is insidious) Maybe the installer is "lurking"  Also run normal and when it crashes, reboot in safe and check your console and see if it shows anything.

  • gyongyosim Level 1 Level 1 (0 points)

It crashes every 2-3 days now. I then reboot in safe mode, then reboot normal, and it is working fine.

How can I find out which 3rd party program is causing this?

  • sanjampet Level 5 Level 5 (7,710 points)

Try a smc and a pram,to clear it out then go to the console and see if it tells you the offending application.

  • gyongyosim Level 1 Level 1 (0 points)

I'll try that but to tell you the truth I am not really familiar with Console. What it is displaying is mostly a bunch of gibberish to me, what exactly should I be looking for?

  • gyongyosim Level 1 Level 1 (0 points)

CrashReports is empty. Where in Console should I be looking?

  • sanjampet Level 5 Level 5 (7,710 points)

Usually the aplication name is included.

It could also be in the right column as well, After clearing the cache will make it easier, things like MacKeeper, and Cleam my Mac...etc should be easy to find, then disable.

  • gyongyosim Level 1 Level 1 (0 points)

Thank you, I'll try that, and see what happens. If any update, I'll come back to you! thank you very much!

Could you please look into this log? I believe the crash must be in it somewhere...

    Hi gyongyosim,

How many charges has your batter had since you got it? to see this open the Apple Menu > About This Mac then click on More Info followed by System Report and select Power from the left hand side.

Apple released a firmware update for MacBook Pro's to fix a problem where some machines would randomly shut-down without warning where the battery has had more than 1,000 charge cycles.

See http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1626 for details and the download.

    Hi,

    it is only 110, so I don't think it's a battery problem...
