I have never used a smartphone for scanning anything before. Do I need to install an app first or can I just take photos? How does this amazing thing work?

not sure what your trying to scan but see if these apps are suitable for your needs.
?? What is it you want to do? Phones can take pictures, but they do not have scanners built into them. You can not use it to scan a document.
I was hoping to scan bar codes & QR codes (I think that is what they're called). So, looking at the second app that @razmeez09 mentioned might be more useful for me.
Use the camera to photograph what you want to scan. Or search the App Store for an app that will more suit what you want to do.
