Jan 25, 2013 1:40 PM in response to GrmCrkrsby rickfromharleysville,Personal Hotspot uses cellular data only, even when connected to Wifi. It switches from Wifi to cellular when Hotspot is started up. If Wifi was available why would you need to use Hotspot?

Apr 15, 2013 12:45 PM in response to rickfromharleysvilleby ShizzleFizzle,I see this is a 3 month old post, but just in case anyone ever needs this to reference:
Here is a reason why this would be useful, if needed:
I am sitting in a Starbucks. For some reason, my iPad CAN connect to their Wi-Fi today, but my Macbook Pro cannot. Nobody's can. Called AT&T help # and it says they are working on an "issue" in our area with regard to this phenomenon).
So, I want to share this iPad WiFi connection (not it's cellular data) with my MBP, without draining my cellular data plan of bandwidth if possible. The same way internet sharing works on an MBP. it can go either way...sharing a Wi-Fi signal via ethernet, or sharing an ethernet connection via Wi-Fi.
Sadly, I actually thought it was working until I saw my data usage from this past 2 hours. Aaaaargh!

Jun 22, 2013 5:11 AM in response to ShizzleFizzleby ljhopkins2,To add on another use case, I want to use my Apple TV over hotel wifi that requires a "last name/room number" login. Apple TV can't log on to that network, but my iPad can. I can then connect Apple TV to my personal hotspot, but it uses cellular data rather than the existing wifi.
