The background screen on my computer is different than on the tv. And I can't watch or use computer on tv. How do I fix this

I bought a rocket fish Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter. When I connect the computer to my Sony Bravia through a receiver, the tv screen has a different background than on the computer. It also shows different windows when I try to detect display. The computer shows the settings for the computer and the TV shows the settings for the TV. I can not figure out how to get them to work the same. When I hit the button to show all windows on the Mac Pro it will show the Sony window but won't do anything on the computer and I can't watch a video from on the computer. Any way to fix this?

You have your two screens in "extended desktop" mode (two small areas making one larger area). I think you are asking how to switch it to "mirrored" mode (both screens showing the same windows).

Try this:

System Preferences > Displays > Arrangement > Mirror Displays (check the box "on")

System Preferences > Displays > Display > pick a mutually acceptable resolution

(Note that "Arrangement" will only appear on the primary screen.)
