Whilst my two year old was using our ipad the plug exploded, I have the photos if it helps with anything. Why would this happen? I had my home electrics checked they are fine, its 100% genuine factory supplied charger and my ipad and the charger before this were in great shape.

So, make an appointment at the Genius Bar at your local Apple Store.
perhaps it was simply defective. Thier is no way for anyone one here to give you a definitive answer as to why this happened.
Has anyone else had it happen to them? I am affraid of my kids using the ipad now
it's not very common. if it was a known defect apple would recall them immediatley. If you are afraid of letting them use it, do not let them use it while it is charging.
Thats what i'll have to do, I do expect a little more.

This is an Apple user to user forum. Apple doesn't read or respond.
If you donj't report it to Apple, thay have no way to know of the failure. Take it/pictures to an Apple store, or send a letter to Apple.

Post the pictures. This is very rare.
You should take the iPad, the charger and the pictures to your nearest Apple Store. Under no circumstances should you try to use the iPad until then.
This happened to me the other day, sounded like a large ballon bursting but left a large burn mark around the plug and the charger itself blew open. Purchased from amazon, contacted their seller & he is refusing to deal with me until I leave a positive feedback, as if that is now going to happen, raised a product & bullying complaint.
Take it to your nearest Apple Store.

This is almost certainly not a genuine Apple charging adapter. Nearly all adapters sold on Amazon Marketplace or eBay are counterfeit, fraudulently labeled, and not safe to use.
It is difficult to determine counterfeit adapters from an exterior inspection, and an interior inspection destroys the adapter.
Take it to Apple. They will probably confirm that it is counterfeit.
Ok charger confirmed as genuine by apple I will post the photos after work as I can't use photobucket on works system. Sadly I don't have any photos of big foot, just the apple product that exploded.
