Unwanted music controls on startup screen

Recently sometimes (but not always) when I turn on my iPod touch, below the time and date on the startup screen are audio controls (Play and volume). I realize that it's trying to be helpful by allowing me to quickly resume the music I was last playing, but I rarely play music on my iPod, so all it's actually accomplishing is to partly cover my lovely photo of Bruce Wayne. 😉

I went to the Music app but couldn't find any option to tell the iPod, "forget about playing any music." It says that I have a paused "Now playing" track, and all it will let me do is choose another track, not turn off the music completely.

I've only had this iPod for a few months. It seems unlikely (but I guess it's possible) that I never got this stuff on my startup screen previously because I had never played any music on it. Is there any way to make it go away?

I've only seen those controls come up when I wake up my iPod with a double-click of the Home button.

Have you tried restarting or resetting your iPod?

Restart: Press On/Off button until the Slide to Power Off slider appears, select Slide to Power Off and, after the iPod shuts down, then press the On/Off button until the Apple logo appears.

Reset: Press the Home and On/Off buttons at the same time and hold them until the Apple logo appears (about 10 seconds). Ignore the "Slide to power off"

Hi, Jim. Thank you very much for the fast and accurate advice! I think what was happening was that the Home button feels a little stiff so I was probably pushing on it too hard and accidentally pressing it twice. I just tried a double-click now and sure enough the volume control appeared, but when I was careful to just click once, it didn't. That must explain why I only saw it occasionally. I'll try not to be so heavy-thumbed with it henceforth. 😊
