same thing. Left it got home and charged it from the wall.

Maybe there's a bug calculating the battery's remaining charge?

The post regarding the operating tempture is right on. As for the same conditions not happening with the iphone 4 and Samsung you should consider the difference in materials. The iphone 5 and 5s are much slimmer and have metal backs versus the iphone 4 which had two thick glass panes. The Samsung is larger and is largely made of plastic for its case which was the same for the iphone 3 series. A piece of metal in cold weather is much colder to the touch than plastic.

I have been having this happen with a fairly new iPhone 5 (got it in April), which is why I'm here reading this. But since Apple states the "operating ambient temperature" is 32° to 95° F (0° to 35° C), then it makes sense. It was 38°F today and the phone was fine. But last week it was 25°F and the phone shut off even though it had a 65% charge left. When trying to restart it it showed to connect it to the charger. I put it in my pocket for a while to warm it up and then it started up and showed a 35% charge left.

I figured it was the cold killing the battery, since that will happen with any battery. Not sure why I see other people outside on their phones on the same day though.

Thanks for the heads up on replacing the battery. As for the battery issues, I don't know... I've had probably 5 Blackberries and 2 or 3 Droids and never had problems. They have always been able to design a product that worked with the batteries limitations, at least in my opinion. It's -8 degrees F and snowing here, and now i have to worry about my phone not working? That is ludacris to me.

Just have to add my .02, I've owned the iPhone 3G for years 2008 until it decided to die on me October 2012, I purchased the iPhone 5 shortly after it was released November 2012. The iPhone worked great for the winter of 2012 beginning of 2013. After the iOS 7 update, I can't say the same. It now has a mind of it's own and does what it wants, a lot of tasks I try to do, most simple it can't seem to work properly. I've restored several times and I make sure not to back up after restore, I feel the back up might carry over the bug. Still no luck, I live in San Antonio, TX where the winters are not bad at all. This winter has been a cold one for us, this morning I was walking into work and my phone shut down completely, the weather outside 27 F. The iPhone never did this last winter and I never experienced this with my 3G, I understand the 3G plastic back is a major factor on temperature of the phone and the metal gets colder faster but my iPhone 5 shuts down way too often. I've had it over a year now and it's out of warranty, come November when my plan is ready for renewal I will be selling my 5 and purchasing another brand smart phone. Unless Apple decides to do something with iOS 7 because I personally don't like it, yes the control center is neat but I'd trade that any day for a properly working phone.

That's interesting about iOS 7 and the battery. Obviously when I got the phone in April it had iOS 6 on it, so I had never experienced using the phone in the cold except with iOS 7. I have had zero issues with it otherwise.

Today it's 7° outside. I plan on keeping it in my pocket unless I really need to use it!

I do have my phone in a plastic and rubber case, but that probably does nothing to insulate it.

I have an iPhone 4s and i start experiencing this issue this winter after installing ios7. I have owned this phone for 2 1/2 years and last year I never had the issue even at -25C. At that time i had ios6.

From my experience I would say that this issue is likely to be related to the software, since when the phone starts up again (which happens as soon as it gets warmer), the battery is still 80% charged.

My son has my old 3GS with ios6 installed and it works perfectly in the same cold conditions.

Today my iPhone 5 had 58% batteries. It was in an inside pocket, but I went higher up a mountain today and the temperature dropped to 2° C. Even with the phone in an inside pocket, close to my body, it shutdown after 5 minutes outside my jacket... I have seen it do this while watching the screen - it does not go down to low battery and then power off, it is a straight shut down. It won't respond in this state even to show the 'charge' screen.

But now in a warm restaurant, after a few minutes warming up, it's powered on and is right back to 52% where it started. Assuming you are below 0°, I think not a fault, just the way the batteries respond to cold. If it happens when it's not that cold, perhaps there is another issue. I’m really suspecting is battery problem but now, I don't feel half as safe in the winter time. What if there's an emergency?

In other circumstance, my iPhone 5 is shutting down when 75% of battery and outside 7ºC when writing just a simple text. Cannot help myself, but I have never experience this king of behavior on previous models of iPhone or on my children’s Samsung Phone.

When I took it to the "genius" bar, they diagnosed it over the network to find out that all of the hardware on the phone (battery and such other things) was working perfectly. In fact, on the Apple Site, the environmental requirements is : Operating ambient temperature: 0° to 35° C (32° to 95° F).

I am still covered under warranty… and I hope (Apple iOS developers) they will fix the problem shortly.
