macbook pro 2009 running mountain lion
hi after reboot, I try to login and my screen goes white - nothing happens. I try to do a force-quit on applications the window pops up and shows no applications (not even finder) ... I run diagnostics the disks seem to be ok ... I run hardware test detected nothing. Any ideas? Thanks

Seems like it would be a kernal panic or hard drive failing. Interesting no results.
Disk Utility might say something about SMART status- of course this is incomplete at best. Highlight the main drive.
I had to reinstall mountain lion.... I did not know anything else to do... Seems that all my data is there, but I have no clue about what happened, and most frightening - no clue if it might happen again!!! I'm ordering a new hard drive, just in case this is getting stale...

Have you tried starting in the Safe Mode to see if the same thing happens:
after login screen goes white
