You aren't asking dumb questions....
Here's the deal. Each person should be using a separate IDs for iMessage and FaceTime on all of the devices they own. If, for example, you own and iPad and an iPhone and your boyfriend has an iPhone, you would use your ID on your iPad and your phone, and your boyfriend would use a different ID on his phone. This keeps each person's iMessages and FaceTime calls separated, and allows each person to get them on all the devices they own.
You do need to provide a different email address for each Apple ID. This allows Apple to contact your if there is ever a problem with your account (such as needing to reset your password). If you don't have one, just get a free gmail account. In order to activate the ID, Apple will send you a verification email to the address you give them. You will have to click the Verify Now link on this email in order to validate the ID.
If you are already sharing the same ID on both your phones, when you get your new ID, on your phone go to Settings>Messages>Send & Receive tap the ID, sign out, then sign back in with your new ID. Do the same thing in Settings>FaceTime. Then just set up iMessage and FaceTime on your iPad with your new ID and you're good to go.
Reply back if you still have questions on this. (I know it can get complicated.)
