command Z will undo your last edit, if in use.
If you have local snapshots turned on you can go back in time. Depending on which OS you are running
command z didnt work, it makes the picture into a zip file. how do i know if the snapshots is on and how do i use it?
Time Machine in the upper right corner need to be on.

see the photo illustration above for opened jpg in Preview.
In Gimp the undo keys are control-Z
If you cropped a image that is a Jpeg, .JPG, and then saved it under the same name there is no going back. You changed then overwrote the original.
The only images you can reverse the changes on, After the fact, is RAW images and only when using a RAW image editing and adjusting program like Adobe Camera RAW.
Otherwise even when using a program like Photoshop if you edit a JPG image and then Re-Save it using the same name those edits are forever.
