Q: how do i consiolidate my photo masters in Aperture 3. I have a vault from Aperture 2 but 3 will not access it.

I use Aperture for photo editing and management and had been working in Aperture 2. I created a vault on my external HD to store my masters in. I had done something to my computer (not sure what) and ended up wiping my internal HD and reinstalling all of my software. After that I was not able to access my vault so most of my masters are basically gone. I attemped to move them with no luck. Frustrated by this point I upgraded to Aperture 3 thinking it would help me be able to get into the vault only to find out that 3 can not consolidate 2 vaults. I do not know what to do at this point but am really bummed to think that my masters may be gone forever. A hard way to learn that nothing in more secure than just saving the photos to DVD prior to Aperture...

Can anyone give me a clue on how I can recover my masters?

iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

What was the problem? Could you not reinstall Aperture 2? Or could you not upgrade to the Aperture 2 version that you last used with your vault? I think you need to reinstall exactly the Aperture 2 version, that created the vault. Then use it to restore your Aperture 2 library from the vault. Once you have your Aperture 2 library back, you can back it up, rebuild it to repair any damages and open it in Aperture 3.

I'dreally think it would be best to get Aperture 2 to work to restore your Aperture library  from the vault.  Can you tell us exactly the Error messages you get, when you try to install, upgrade, or use Aperture 2?

    Leonie, thanks for the reply.

Honestly I don't remember what the issue was, it was over a year ago and I have just not gotten around to playing with it anymore. I know I'm lame but busy!

I had just finished up some online classes and was cleaning up my HD and deleted the wrong file. After that my mac was just not right so I did the HD wipe and reinstall.

I will put Aperture 2 on another machine and that work on restoring the vault from there, how can i tell what version of Aperture 2 the vault was created in?

I'll let you know how I come out.

I don't have Aperture 2 so that I could check, but Aperture 3 vaults in  Mt. Lion do show the version number in the Finder, like this:

I will put Aperture 2 on another machine and that work on restoring the vault from there,

If you did all available upgrades and your vault is recent, it probably will have been created with the latest available Aperture upgrade, AP 2.1.4.

If you can restore the library this way, back it up, and then rebuild it, before moving it to your SL machine. To rebuild an Aperture library, hold down the Option and Command keys while opening your library in Aperture 1.5 or 2, then click the Rebuild Now button..

See the Release Notes on upgrading - scroll down all the way to the bottom:  http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2518

    Leonie,

I installed Aperture 2 on my iMac and was able to access the vault with my masters. I relocated the masters to files on my external HD outside the vault. I am now saving each file with masters to CD / DVD and will then import the masters into Aperature 3 on my MBP.

    thanks for yoru help!
