iMac 21.5 Mid 2011 keeps crashing (kernel panics)

The cause for these crashes is most likely that I moved the Mac from office to my kitchen where, as I found out later on, power plugs were not grounded.

If fixed that and crashes occur much less frequent now, but they still occur.

What I did:

  • I fixed permissions, no problems left
  • I checked the disks, no problems found
  • I rand hardware diagnostics (starting w/ alt-D) no problems found
  • OS and software are all updated
  • I updated the firmware to the latest version

The next step should probably be to bring the Mac to the next apple store. Alas, experience with my local app store is not very encouraging.

Do you have any suggestion what I can do before I spend ages (days or weeks) in a north african apple store or reinstall the OS?

There crahes usually happen when the box is under heavy load. I can't put my finger on it but a lot of Wifi network traffic (copying Gigabytes) and/or listening to music seems to make crashes more likely to happen.

Panic reports have various causes, the last one related to the audio service. But that can just as well be a coincidence (other crashes happened elsewhere):

This is the problem. This extension is causing that multiple extensions (audio and video extensions) crash. Also, I see that you have both VMware and VirtualBox installed, and both do the same, so you can uninstall one and use the other one.

Update VMware to the most recent version. If it's the latest version, uninstall it and use VirtualBox instead to run virtual machines. Also, update VirtualBox > http://www.virtualbox.org

Jan 26, 2013 6:29 AM in response to mende1

Thank you mende1!

I am not using VirtualBox on this host anymore, so I deinstalled it (I did not run virtualbox and vmware in parallel). I'll see if the crashes keep will stop or not.

How do you know that the vmioplug is causing the problems? Do you mean this specific version or is VMWare Fusion generally unusable? I did not find references to that on google.

Jan 26, 2013 7:09 AM in response to mende1

I have VMWare Fusion 5.0.2 installed (now without any VirtualBox drivers hanging out).

I am working on a Windows installation in VMWare. The crash reported above happened after a couple of hours working in the VM. To my understanding the vmioplug driver is loading before the VM starts.

For example now (Mac is still running, so is the VM), I see:

bash-3.2# kextstat |fgrep -v apple

bash-3.2#

Here is a new crash report (happened some 10 minutes after uninstalling VirtualBox).

I am copying a 12GB folder containing sources from a windows workstation to the VM hosted by the mac. I get the impression that network traffic seems to be triggering these crashes.

Unless I find out that VMWare is really the cause of the problem, I would like to stick with it. I made some unpleasant experiences with VirtualBox on Linux.

So here goes the next report:

You are still having issues with VMWare. Did you follow VMWare's instructions for uninstalling their app prior to upgrading to version 5? Also did you restart the machine in Safe Mode, this will clear some caches. I'd recommend you do so. Using older versions of applications that aren't designed for the most up-to-date versions of OS X can and frequently do cause KPs.

Jan 26, 2013 7:40 AM in response to rkaufmann87

I don't know if my issues are due to VMWare. I did not update VMWare, I installed it for the first time. I had an old version of VirtualBox installed which is now removed (as far as I can tell completely)

I did not start the machine in Safe Mode yet (thanks for the hint, I'm new to MacOS, so I don't know the standard things to do in such situations yet).

My current action plan is:

  • Waiting for the Parallels download to finish to see if I get crashes with Parallels when doing the same thing I do with VMWare (Copying gigabytes of data seems to be related to the crashes).
  • If yes, I know its not VMWare specific and go back to Safe Mode to see if that changes anything.
  • Come back here whining when I see the next crash ;-)

Thanks for your support guys! 😉

You will not solve your problem by downloading more vitualtization applications. You should start with a clean slate, follow the developers instructions for uninstallling Fusion and also Virtual Box. Then restart in Safe Mode to clear some caches and restart normally. Next download and install the most up-to-date version of either Fusion or Parallels possible and work on keeping these up-to-date.

Another related question: How reliable is the hardware test? It passed without errors, but looking at the begining of this story, I still feel uncomfortable about the powerplugs (yellow grounding cable not connected) which had the effect that the Mac was crashing very often and also having some current on the case (not much but noticable).

Can I assume that the Hardware is ok if the test passes?

Well the goal is to see if VMWare is the problem. I don't know how to reproduce the crashes other than copying huge amounts of data in the VM (copying them on MacOS didnt cause crashes so far).

Using Parallels is just my best guess to see if something similar has the same effect.

If Parallels also triggers panics, then I know at least that its not VMWare itself.

If both are causing panics, then I will uninstall them all, start in safe mode, install VMWare again, if it crashes then uninstall it, safe mode, parallels installation, if that crashes too, it's (presumably) not the Virtualization that is the reason.

Sounds reasonable?

Also, VirtualBox worked properly on your Mac, so Parallels will work properly, too.

I don't know if it would work or worked before. I upgraded from lion and never started VirtualBox (a colleague used VirtualBox, so I don't know whether it worked for him).

Anyway, I will do what you suggest and post the results.

Nope it does not sound reasonable. Please follow the suggestions provided, you are only making your problem worse by going off on off-beat solutions.

I am grateful for your suggestions, but I don't understand where you see problems in my approach.

What am I making worse by trying to simulate the same operations I perform on VMWare with Parallels to see if they generate the same problem?

If I don't get crashes with Parallels, I will still try to isolate and if possible fix the problem with VMWare, if only out of curiosity.

This discussion aside. What does starting MacOS in clean state do? I did not do any upgrades (related to VMWare), because I just installed it for the first time 2 days ago. I don't know MacOS, but from my experience with Unixoids, I would expect that a kernel would not panic in some IO stack because of some strane cached context.

It's not that I don't believe you that it's a good idea to work on a clean state (I completely agree with that), I just would like to understand your concerns about installing Parallels in this situation.

Because you the more you add to the problem the more difficult it is to get to the root solution. I suspect your issue is you install Virtual Box (possibly and outdated version but what can you expect from freeware), then you installed Fusion and now your're trying to install Parallels. OS X isn't like MS Windows (thanks heavens) in that you have to install the OS when you begin having issues, it's much more stable. However when you begin having issues with apps, paticularly KP related issues the place to start is by following the developers instructions for uninstalling then check to see if the verison of the app is compatible with OS X verison you have installed. If it is safe then download the most up to date version. It's a pretty simple concept but most people are lazy and just don't follow the fundamentals.
