Airport Extreme Talk to Another Airport Extreme

I have two Airport Extreme. One is the newer 3Tb Time Machine which is is my prime router/backup and the other is a 4th Generation Extreme. I have most everything going through the Time Machine but I also have a piece of equipment connected through a Cat5/Ethernet cable to the other Airport Extreme so as to view the information on the connected equipment via the Airport Extreme for internet servicing.

Can Airport equipment talk to other Airport equipment without changing Base Stations? If so, how is the setup made?

Mac Pro (Mid 2012), OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2), Other Mac's linked to Airport

You will need to give us some more info.

How are the two Airport Extremes connected.. ?

I am guessing that the 3TB Time Machine is not an Airport Extreme.. .it is a Time Capsule.. it gets confusing but helps if we keep all the terminology correct.

Time Machine .. software in the computer for backup.

Time Capsule.. An Airport Extreme with a built in hard disk.

Airport Extreme.. Apple's main wireless router.

If they are connected by ethernet or wireless yes, you can have a computer see both in the same network.. but they will have to be in the same network. If they are in different networks then even if connected the setup is much more tricky.

So we need to know how the two are connected.. what mode are they both in.. and are they in the same IP network.

If they have no connection, what is possible? Are they able to be connected by ethernet? Or by wireless which means one has to extend the network of the other.

Tell us what you are trying to achieve might help us know what will work.

It is an Apple Time Capsule. At least it has a hard drive for computer backups and is a router to which I connect a printer and the fiber optic internet via a Cat5 cable.

I have two digital security systems and which to view real time and the recorded results while away from home. One digital video recorder (DVR) is wired via Ethernet to the time capsule/router and the other DVR is Ethernet to an Apple Airport extreme 1st generation (has a green light). I have a 4th generation Airport Extreme but cannot get a green light out of it while hooked to the 2nd DVR, even using Airport Utility 5.6. Hope this makes sense.

So, the reason for the question is an attempt to see both DVR's outputs via remote monitoring on a laptop.

Jan 26, 2013 7:23 PM in response to Bud Willner

Ok, you have a couple of issues.

One is that you cannot use the same access port on both DVR.. port forwarding for access can only access one device on one port.

How exactly are you logging into the network?

Are you using BTMM and iCloud or direct login to the main TC or some other router?

Are you using a VPN system instead?

Is it purely using browser to view the dvr or is special software involved?

I don't think I can do anything without answers to the above.

But if you want to do this.. vpn is the right way.. far superior to any other method.. where your remote device becomes part of the network and you don't need to do port forwarding.

TC has no vpn and you would need to use a proper vpn router to achieve this.

OK, I WILL LOOK OVER THEM PORTD ON EACH DVR, E.G., MAKE ONE 80 AND THE OTHER 81 OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT.

DIRECT LOG INTO THE TC.

Are you using a VPN system instead?

NO

USING THE BROWSER.

I'M NOT FAMILIAR WITH VPN EXCEPT THAT BUSINESS'S USE IT AS YOU MENTION. NEED TO FIND A PLACE TO WORK MY WAY INTO IT.

TC has no vpn and you would need to use a proper vpn router to achieve this.

THAT'S A BEGINNING OF A LOT OF EFFORT AND COST. WOULDN'T KNOW WHERE TO PUT THE VPN ROUTER.

Jan 29, 2013 3:19 PM in response to Bud Willner

Yes, try port translating.. or using different ports..either way should work.

And certainly using VPN is a lot harder way to go.. except that it works.. once you actually buy proper hardware.. a vpn router.. it would replace the TC which would go into bridge mode and can continue to provide backup and wireless. VPN routers are not that expensive and offer vastly superior security.

You need to understand you are punching holes into the local network. On a very key port.

And port forwarding can be a major pain keep running as well.. although it is not going to cost you more in hardware.. just hair!!

So you have been doing computers for a while. 😉

Wirelessly, I would go to my TC and then to the VPN router, correct? Since I have two DVR's would I need two VPN units? If I'm going to go this method, I would need a bit of information.

Yes, although the actual setup would depend on the product. Generally I would go a cheap and simple vpn unit. And keep as much of the rest running as it was, with the TC in bridge and still providing wireless and TM backup to the network.

How do you get broadband.. it is hugely different if you use adsl, to cable to fibre to 3G/4G.

Indeed you could run vpn behind the existing router if you only want external access. That would put the DVR on a separate network to the main one.

There are plenty of ways to skin the proverbial cat.

Go slowly as once you commit yourself down the path it is hard to pull back.

I guess I would try to get port forwarding to work.. to one camera/dvr first.. as that in itself can be a good exercise as somewhere along the way you need to do some of this to get vpn running.

So tell me more info..

And I do have one question.. exactly how are you trying to access the camera now.. I want to see the exact command you use in the browser remotely to attempt the connection. Because Apple Routers do not have dyndns and most people do not have static public IP addresses.

I would also like to see some screen shots of your port forwarding setup.

And please do use 5.6 utility.. I have a nasty idea.. 6.1 just doesn't work.

Jan 30, 2013 1:01 PM in response to LaPastenague

Yes, I've been in it since '55 (Univac & Aerospace). Now retired with set income, adding VPN accounts leaves me somewhat hesitant.

I'm wireless to my TC/TM, Cat3 wired to the fiber optic interchange box, and fiber out to the internet (ISP).

The plan you suggest is what I have been trying. Seeing I had two DVR's to work with, I wanted to be prepared for putting both out to see them when on vacation or what ever and that's why I posed the question.

Port forwarding seems to be a problem as does the DVR does not see a proper IP address. One is aired directly to the TC/TM box and should pop in correctly but doesn't. I'm curious about the IP, MAC address, DEV port number (8880), and Port 80 settings. It may be that my ISP is blocking 80.

How is suppose to work is that I get an IP address from Iplanding which is the TC/TM aIP address, insert that IP number into the Browser URL address box and I'm to see what my cameras see.. Problem is that the DVR box does not have the proper IPP address, i.e., one that starts with 196.xx.xx.xx.

I have tried Portfowarding and they see the TC/TM IP address. When attempting to get a port forward, the web program asks for the router maker (Apple), the router (the Airport extreme), what software I want to forward which I have no idea.

So, yes I'm still confused.

I do use Airport Utility 5.6 and 6.1 (now and then) to see functionality.

Take it one step at a time because it sounds like you have a rather complex way of getting internet. If you have double NAT in there somewhere,,, you are dead.. no way will this work.

Please open a terminal on a computer and type

traceroute 8.8.8.8

The result will show me how many NATs you are passing through. Copy and paste the result here thusly.

macproie-5:~ Ray$ traceroute 8.8.8.8

traceroute to 8.8.8.8 (8.8.8.8), 64 hops max, 52 byte packets

1 bigpond (192.168.2.254) 63.453 ms 96.763 ms 99.969 ms

8 google-public-dns-a.google.com (8.8.8.8) 21.162 ms 21.338 ms 22.006 ms

And find out your public IP.

http://whatismyipaddress.com/

Don't post that address.. mine is static so I don't want people to see it. The traceroute doesn't matter.. internal addresses are not routable and the external address is the ISP.

That is the IP that must appear on the WAN side of the one and only NAT router you have between you and the camera.. if you cannot see that IP then you cannot reach them.

User uploaded file

Here is summary page of an unconnected TC.. it is showing the IP address down the bottom but since it has no connection it produces a self assigned address..

Jan 31, 2013 11:40 AM in response to LaPastenague

http://whatismyipaddress.com/ Has given/verified the IP address.

Your summary page looks like mine except I have a number of wireless Clients. You mention WAN but I have everything on LAN (I thought) and MAC addressing is not enabled but NAT is enabled. IPv6 is set at 'Link-local only'. I do see you have no wireless security whereas I have WPA2 Personal (using the 5Ghz setup). Frankly, we are in an area where such security is really not needed - Farm. Connection sharing is set at 'Share a public IP address'. Should I change any of these?

As I have mentioned, I tried to place the shot into the posting and since that didn't work, I searched for a way to attach a file but could not find such.

I did try a different port number (81) but that didn't either. Tell me about the port translate on the TC if you have the time.

I know this is taking up time so I appreciate your helping me.

Jan 31, 2013 2:53 PM in response to budspwr

It is easy to post pictures.. take a screen shot and click on the little camera.. you have to use Safari in Mountain Lion not Chome though. I haven't tried Firefox. It is using Java so there might be java issues with Chrome.

User uploaded file

Port translate is simple.. Take incoming port.. I said 8000 on TCP.. you don't need UDP for html.. and use 80 as the private port.

Make sure you use the correct private IP for the camera. This should be locked either in the camera or in the TC.

Then to connect you type into the browser

http://publicipaddress:8000

My problem with your setup is how do you know your public IP address?? Does the camera have dynamic DNS..?? The TC is totally useless in this regard.

Jan 31, 2013 3:56 PM in response to budspwr

I'll get on my other machine and send the shot want but for now I'll tell you what I got on the DVR: IP 010.000.001.003, Gateway 010.000.001.001, DNS 010.000.001.001. Not at all what I need. I changed the to 192.168.2.???. I don't recall the rest but it didn't lock in.

I went to port forward and got the follow information to insert port mapping and when I went there and selected port mapping/Apple remote desktop, the ports were already inserted.

Well, I tried to add an image but was notified the the image was not allowed? It was 1.7 Mb. Will try something else. And that didn't work either. 164 kb on Safari. I would like you to see my port mapping. Will try Firefox.
