Mac Pro 1.1 with regular Kernel Panic

Hello!

First of all, this is my very first post. So I am really sorry if I miss something out of, like much needed information. Just let me know, and I'll provide it asap!

That being said, I am having some huge problems with my loved Mac Pro 1.1. I use this as my media center, so the fact that it's beeing out of service almost makes me cry sometimes. The machine has worked well for a long time, but suddenly - the last month, it has started getting Kernel Panics.

I have tried reinstalling OS X Lion several times, I have tried a different harddrive, tried "half" of the ram running at once, and then the other half later (and therefore both of the riser cards by them self), I've done Memtest86 without any errors... I've tried looking in the Panic logs, but nothing. Nothing helps. The only thing I have not tested yet is the GPU. I have ordered a new and cheap one on eBay, still waiting on that one.

Here is my most recent Kernel Panic log:

... not a software problem unless you have added a lot of intrusive third-party kernel extensions. This report lists _none_...

These are possible indicators of uncorrectable Memory errors.

You Mac Pro uses Error Correcting Code Memory, which store an additional eight syndrome bits with each word in memory. When read back, the syndrome bits can determine when a single bit error has occurred, and Hardware in the Xeon processor points to which bit is in error, and corrects it on the fly.

Most Double-bit errors are not correctable, and deliberately cause a kernel panic to halt the machine and keep the error from propagating into your data. The above has the look of such an error.

.

Thank you. I have no third-party kernel extensions at all. This error log is from a fresh install with only the Media Center app "Plex" installed - nothing else (other than system default).

So it's most likely a RAM-related problem, then? I'll see if I can get some new sticks on monday. I'll report back, in case any other users can relate to the problem.

Thank you so much for your time!

Looks like the same issue. Just a thought: Could it be a bad riser card?

Uncorrected error

That is consistent with Hardware problems, specifically uncorrectable RAM Memory Errors.

It does not happen in the same place as before. The non-trend discounts software as a possible cause and adds weight to the memory error argument.

It is extremely unlikely that this has anything to do with Graphics Processing Unit (display) cards.

There have been quite a few problems related to GPU Hardware failures described here. But none of them looks even remotely like yours.

Everyone with kernel panics that look like yours, has replaced some RAM modules (or occasionally a riser-card) and lived happily ever after. Some had modules with the Vendor's stickers on them and got replacements free under the lifetime warranty provided by that vendor.

You can get an appointment at the Genius Bar for an evaluation FREE, in warranty or out, and you are under no obligation to have them do any paid work for you. Apple wants you (if possible) to be a happy customer.

Thanks. I have ordered a set of new memory modules. Hope that they will resolve my problem.

I was thinking of other possible resolutions since I have tested the memory without errors with Memtest, and by using them separately and still getting the Kernel Panic events. I guess they can go bad in groups, or maybe all of them, not just one or two.

My location is Europe (Norway), and we don't have a Genius Bar available - but I would definately visit them if I could.

Thanks for all of your help and time!

Hello, again! 🙂

So, I replaced my FB-DIMMs to a new set of 8Gb (2x4). I thougt for a couple of days that the problem had been solved, but no. Here we go again. 5 kernel panics in the last two days... Even when the machine is idle, and not doing any work.

I just took a quick look through iStat, and noticed that my CPU temps are a bit higher than I'm used to.

Take a look at the attached picture. Is this within accepted temperatures? This is in Celcius:

User uploaded file

CPU 1: 59 degrees C (139.2F), CPU 2: 56 degrees C (132.8F). As I am writing this, I can see that they peak up to 63 degrees C (145F). This is when the machine is idle, and not in use for anything more consuming than Finder as an open application.

Could this actually be my problem?

Here is an example of the most recent Kernel Panic log:

I have swapped all of the old memory-modules with brand new ones. Not using any of the old sticks. I will try to isolate them into groups again, maybe even swapping which Riser card I am using (one at a time with different sticks).

New Riser-cards is on the way, should be here within the week...

It looks like the KPs is coming in "groups" of some kind. Take a look at this:

User uploaded file

Each with 4-7 minutes between them, but after a few it stops, and starts again the next day or so... Annoying.

Feb 11, 2013 9:30 AM in response to magnusalex

You need to assure yourself that you have some "known good" parts available. This work is tedious and requires you to be methodical.

You start with a riser you assume is trustworthy and a pair of candidate DIMMs installed in the first slots. You run it for a while and if no kernel panics, you can tentatively assume these parts, alone, on this riser, are know-good parts. You may choose to thump on it for several hours or overnight with a memory test program.

Then you do it gain with a different pair of DIMMs.

Then again with a different pair until you have assured yourself that each pair works when installed by itelf on this riser.

Then you do the same drill with the other riser.

Then you start using single pairs on each riser, installed together.

Then you add more of your trusted pairs in the empty slots.

An error at any stage implicates the last changes made.

If you cannot be methodical yourself, you should hire a technician who can do this sort of work for you.
